HOW TO SAVE ENERGY ROUND THE HOUSE

1. When you're home, turn your water heater down to 120 degrees. When you're away, turn it to its lowest setting.
2. Wash your clothes in cold water. 90% of the energy used by washing machines goes to heating water.
2. Use your dishwasher and clothes washer only when they are fully loaded.
3. Line dry your clothes as much as possible, especially in the summer. If you need a new dryer, try to find one with a moisture sensor in order to turn off the dryer automatically when your clothes are dry.
4. Check for air gaps and fix any leaky spots with weather stripping and caulking.
5. Properly insulate your home. You can check how much insulation you have by measuring the depth with a ruler. 7 inches of fiber glass or rock wool or 6 inches of cellulose mean you have a level of R-22. If you have less than this level, it would be good to add more insulation. This can save 5 to 25% on your heating and cooling costs.
6. Consider installing high efficiency windows. These windows, such as those with double panes of high performance glass, are 40% more efficient than standard windows. If your windows are operable, make sure you know how to use them properly for natural ventilation.
7. Use Light Timers. You can use timers for more than just lights. Plug all of your cell phone chargers into one timer and set it to turn off when you're not at home. Set your TV, sound system, DVD, etc. to turn off late at night when no one's using them.

The most powerful earthquake in 40 years erupted under the Indian Ocean near Sumatra on Dec. 26, 2004. It caused giant, deadly waves to crash ashore in nearly a dozen countries, killing tens of thousands. A long stretch of Sri Lanka's coast was devastated by these killer waves, with more than 40,000 dead and staggering 2.5 million people displaced. Although 1,600km from the epicentre, the waves struck with huge force and swept inland as far as 5 kilometers. Waves as high as six meters had crashed into coastal villages, sweeping away people, cars and even a train with 1700 passengers. It was the worst human disaster in Sri Lanka history.

We've used the Sun for drying clothes and food for thousands of years, but only recently have we been able to use it for generating power.

The Sun is 150 million kilometres away, and amazingly powerful.

Just the tiny fraction of the Sun's energy that hits the Earth (around a hundredth of a millionth of a percent) is enough to meet all our power needs many times over.

In fact, every minute, enough energy arrives at the Earth to meet our demands for a whole year - if only we could harness it properly.

Solar cells provide the energy to run satellites that orbit the Earth. These give us satellite TV, telephones, navigation, weather forecasting, the internet and all manner of other facilities

Advantages

Solar energy is free - it needs no fuel and produces no waste or pollution.
In sunny countries, solar power can be used where there is no easy way to get electricity to a remote place.
Handy for low-power uses such as solar powered garden lights and battery chargers, or for helping your home energy bills.

Disadvantages

Doesn't work at night.
Very expensive to build solar power stations.
Solar cells cost a great deal compared to the amount of electricity they'll produce in their lifetime.
Can be unreliable unless you're in a very sunny climate. In the United Kingdom, solar power isn't much use for high-power applications, as you need a large area of solar panels to get a decent amount of power. However, technology has now reached the point where it can make a big difference to your home fuel bills..

Is it renewable?

Solar power is renewable. The Sun will keep on shining anyway, so it makes sense to use it.

ANALYS ALVAREZ . NI2C

Perfume: the Story of a Murderer. This astonishing novel was written by Patrick Sushkind in 1985 in a town near Munich, Germany. This book has been translated into many languages because it was a hit and in 2006 it was made into a film, also very successful.

The story takes place in Paris , in the eighteenth century. It´s about Jean Baptiste Grenoulle, an infant who was born with a sublime gift : an absolute sense of smell and no personal odour. He survives his orphaned childhood in the slums of Paris thanks to his gift and his intelligence until he become the apprentice of a prominent perfume maker who teaches him the ancient artof mixing oils and herbs.

However, he isn´t satisfied and starts capturing the smells of objects . he want to create the "ultimate perfume". One day ,he catches the scent of a beautiful young viergin and instinctively he discovers the way to steal her fragance, killing her!

The book is full of vivid descriptions that make you feel every single smellmentioned by the author . It´s really beautifully written . Besides, you can´t stop reading to see what happens in the end.

I highly recommend it. you will enjoy it a lot if you like ingenious and stilish fantasy.

THE WAY HOME

The Way Home, by Sue Leather, is an excelent book that has eight different stories, wich are about people who are going somewhere and find unexpected situations, but the main issue in all chapters is the difficult relationship between people. Each chapter takes place in a different places, like Mexico or EEUU.

In the first story, Alex who is at the airport to go home remembers an affair, that she had had with an attractive man, and her remorses come back to her mind. In the second Annie, a sensitive writer , coincides on a train with an old friend, when she is going to Bologna. This friend pours out his feelings to her. The third story is about a junior reporter who has to interview a boy sentenced to death by a crime that the boy hasn´t committed. In the fourth a man and a woman are going towards Texas in her truck, but she doesn´t know that he has killed her husband. The fifth is about a taxi driver, a day when he gets home, he meets a man in his sofa, in this situation he leaves his house and so he avoids violence. In the sixth, a teacher of a film school orders to write a story that shows the relationship between two people and one of this stories is the plot of this chapter. The seventh is about a man who spends his free time following a woman who likes him and finally she surprises him. And in the last, the lives of four people intersect at a motel in Austin Texas and all they have an end that they wouldn´t imagine.

As the book has eight different chapters, the characters have not been described in detail. In general the plots are rather conventional. Despite this, there are very entertaining situations although the description is rather poor. In some chapters as the first, second, fifth, there is unfaithfulness, that the reader does not expect, but then the author doesn´t develop in detail.

I recommend The Way Home so you can spend your spare time with this book and you will enjoy a interesting moment, because there is no time when they can suppose the end, but when readers are enjoying ,the author doesn´t complete the story. I think that this is a good reading for the beach or a similar places. Moreover this kind of book, with short stories, you can read atany moment and anywhere.

“Murder Maker” written by Margaret Johnson, is an interesting thriller , whose main character is Carla, a single woman who isbetrayed by her ex boyfriend. Other characters are three Carla’s friends called Diana, Gemma and Cathy who have something in common with Carla; all of them were abandoned by their partners. The action is mainly set in Cuba and in the northeast of England.

The story begins when Carla’s partner, Mark, breaks their relation saying to her “I’ve met somebody else”. Four simple words that change completely the world around Carla. Later, she meets other three women who are in a similar situation and little by little the idea of revenge is coming to her mind. This is how Carla becomes a murderer. But the question is: Is worth it the revenge?

The book shows us how small the difference between love and hate is and how an ordinary person, in an extreme situation, can became a murderer.

If you want discover that, do not stop reading this surprising book, because I am sure you´ll enjoy reading it and you will be able to make conclusions by yourself.

Richard is a young backpacker from England who arrives in Thailand looking for adventure.At a cheaap guest house he is given a map of the perfect beach a sort of paradise. the guest who has given him the mapcommits suicide. He meets a French couple and the three of them decide to go to that beach. Before leaving ,Richard decised to tell some American tourist about the island in case they don´t succeeed in getting there. They find the island and realize that there are more people living there fram from civilization. They become part of the community and share the work which is fishing, gardening, cooking...Richard doesn´t like the leader of the group, bugs, who gives him difficult tasks

He has to go round the island and discovers that there are men growing heroine and they are protecting it with weapons. Things go wrong on the island: one member of the fishing group poisons most of the people with a dead fish. there are also two people who have been attacked by sharks. tehy both eventually die.

The American tourist richard had met arrive at the island and they are killed by the the guards of the heroine fields. Richard is getting tired of that atmosphere and decides to leave the beach with some other people . A celebration is going to take place the following day, so they put some drug in the food so people wouild be dizzy. But the end of the story has to be read

I recommend this book because it´s entertaining and you keep on reading because you don´t know what´s going to happen. He may not reach civilization again.

Frozen pizza and other slices of life, by Antoinette Moses, is a very good book which tells us eight different stories about different people who show us the same country (England) but from their own point of view and tells us eight different stories about their particular lives.

About the eight fascinating stories, all of them are charged with dramatic, funny, interesting and mystery histories about people in their ordinary lives, a especial work who shows you another face of society and the problems that a lot of people are having very near your home and motivates you to do something to help those people; an old teacher who remembers sadly his old days at a school teaching in better times but who never gets tired because he has a special hobby working with wood and repairing very old wood furniture; a young boy who is living a short period of time in England with a wealthy family and his interesting point of view of the society which is so strange for him; a very especial moment when you are a teenager and you fall in love with a mysterious music that you have been remembering all your life until the destiny pull strings and you come across him and histories like that; very interesting histories which help us to understand and admire that country that most of us maybe don´t know very well, but that is fascinating with their people, their traditions and his “particular way to see life”.

This book can teleport you to London, to a small town in the north of England or maybe to an English beach and its small village with a lot of different people living their own lives which are not veru different from ours. When you read the book there is a particular touching feeling with some of the stories, with others just the opposite, funny feelings but in general all of them are excellent histories about real life.

I thoroughly recommend "Frozen pizza and other slices of life " if you want to know more about human feelings, about England and its history or only if you are bored and you want to do something different, because this is not the typical book, this is a very special one.

The fly and other horror stories, by John Escott, is an excellent and entertaining,horror stories collection that take place in a variety of places, like a very ddry desert, a strange beach, an odd old factory…

The common link between all those stories is the thrilling moments that the main characters of each story make us living like we are the true main characters.

The mystery normally begins when, a couple or only one person arrives at a strange place and, a few days later, something not very usual in an ordinary life life happens.

For example, everybody thinks flies are a nuisance because they are annoying when they buzz around us, but, anyway, we can brush them away with our hands or something light .After all, a fly is only about half the size of one of our nails. But suppose for a moment it is not. Catch a fly, look at it closely (look at its head, its eyes, its legs…). Now imagine that this thing is the size of a human…

Another story is about a big and expensive ship whose crew is constituted by a lot of famous people: a pretty model, one of the best films director of Hollywood, a few of actors, many expensive film objects like a big camera and tapes for the incredible sound of the film. These people want to record a fascinating film about one of the most unbelievable creatures of the world: King Kong.

But on their way to the unique land where this animal lives, the ship crashes with lots of rocks in the sea; they have not seen them because of a dense fog that has caught them sleeping. When they finally escape they arrive at land. But, immediately, a dinosaur’s stampede chases them. Everything seemed lost but, suddenly, an enormous ape appeared and saved them but it kidnaps the model and they disappear as fast as it have come.

When the crew wis ready again they start to search for the girl. Some days later, when the food is finishing and the moral too, they find her and rescue her with a lot of effort and worth.

The last story is about a writer that arrives at an almost desert town to write his last book.

But, during his stay in a hotel of the town, strange things start to happen. He finds a sculpture of a woman being murdered by a man with an axe. The days after that, the writer begins to behave strangely, and he threatens his wife to kill her. So, she tries to escape from him, but her husband, who is getting crazy, catches a fire axe and he starts to chase her to kill her. The woman hides from him in the bathroom, but he chopps down the bathroom door and he puts his head through the hole; the woman takes a knife and she hurts him in his hand. She escapes from him and the city.

I thoroughly recommend this fascinating and excellent book. Readers will have an insuperable moment reading this amusing, entertaining, excellent book.

Ideas for recycling other items:
• Old or broken household goods such as toasters, transistor radios can be used by others for parts. Sell them cheaply at a garage sale.
• Carry a supermarket bag with you when you go walking so that you can pick up glass, litter or other plastic bags.
• Wrapping paper, bows, ribbons, and boxes can be used to wrap someone else's presents.
• Recycle jars by using them for home preserves.
• Ice cream containers can be reused around the home in a number of ways:
o Storing food in the freezer
o As a container for toys, crayons, clothes pegs
o Biscuit container
• An upside down bottle with small holes in the top can be used to provide water for your pets while you are on holiday.
• Stronger plastic bottles can be used to hold tools and nails etc in the shed. Simply cut three sides and leave one side longer and nail to the wall in the shed.
• Old furniture, clothes, kitchen gear, and bedding are always wanted by charities.

General tips for recycling and avoiding rubbish:
• Buy a smaller rubbish container for the kitchen. This makes you to remember to recycle.
• Make sure bottles and tins are clean before putting in the recycling bin. This prevents flies both at home and the recycling station.
• Reorganise the kitchen so it has an efficient recycling area with good sized bins to help with sorting and holding. This will encourage other members of the household to contribute and help share the work instead of it being reliant on one person.
• Cutting both the tops and the bottoms off tin cans (and placing them inside) and squashing them makes them smaller to fit into the recycling bin.
• Spread the word. By telling other people and helping them to get started, we increase the savings that can be made. Also get your children involved – if we can educate them early, they will grow up and appreciate waste reduction and will be able to apply these skills in later life.

Recycling tips 2
Ideas for recycling household waste in the garden:
• Aluminium trays from pies and cakes make ideal 'drip saucers' to put under pot plants.
• Old tyres can be used outside for plant pots - especially good for plants that like warm soils as they trap the heat.
• The following waste items can be modified and used for planting seedlings:
o Egg cartons
o Tetra-pak cartons
o Plastic bottles
o Plastic containers for cherry tomatoes
o Plastic icecream containers.
• Broken crockery can be used as drainage at the bottom of pot plants.
• Tin cans can be used as:
o Water reservoirs for new plants and trees.
• Old newspapers (including those gathered from your friends) can be used to mulch and weed control the garden. Wet newspaper and place thickly on the garden. Cover with bark or stones.
• Plastic milk bottles can be used to hold snail bait and are pet proof.
• Old stockings can be used to tie up plants in the garden.
• Plastic icecream containers can be cut into strips for seed labels.
Ideas for recycling organic/garden waste:
• If you've done any trimming of trees and hedges, contact the local Zoo to see if they can use these for their animals, either as food or environment improvement.

Recycling tips 1
There are lots of innovative things you can do to help reduce your rubbish – check out some of the tips below to get started.
Making use of your mountain of plastic bags:
• Use them as bin liners.
• Place them in the bottom of plant pots and hanging baskets - they act as great drainage systems.
• Children can use them for carrying PE gear to school.
• Scrunch them up to surround items when you're packaging as an alternative to bubble wrap.
• Use them in the garden to hold your grass cuttings and hedge trimmings before transfer to a compost bin.
• Use them when packing for a holiday to keep dirty/wet clothes and shoes away from dry clothing.
• Use them as 'doggy doo bags' when out walking your dog!
• Some supermarkets recycle plastic bags, so you can return plastic bags to them.
• Re-use washed zip lock bags for sandwiches and snacks rather than using plastic wrap.
Ideas for recycling paper:
• After children's drawings and paintings have been displayed for a while they can be used to wrap presents - this also makes the present special.
• Discarded A4-sized paper can be cut and stapled together to make notepads. Alternatively, if you save five reams, it will cost you about $5 to get a print company to convert this paper into 'proper' notepads.
• 'Use the envelopes you receive in the mail a second time by placing a new address label over the last address. I call this the OMT System ("One more time system"). Old envelopes can also be used for scribbling down shopping lists, to-do lists, and notes.'
• Resealable envelopes can be reused many times: 'My daughter takes one to school when she orders her lunch. The envelope has all details written in felt on the front and the money sealed inside. She brings the envelope home and we use it again until it gets too shabby.'
• Old calendars, colourful pictures, etc. can be used to make your own envelopes. You can unstick a used envelope and use it as a template for making envelopes.
• Old rolls of wallpaper can be used for childrens' drawings.
• Junk mail can be used as scrap paper, or as bedding for pets.
• Cardboard cartons can be used to collect paper for recycling, instead of plastic bags (even breakfast cereal cartons are good).
• SPCA and pet shops appreciate old newspapers.
• Toilet roll centres can be recycled - they're made of cardboard.
• To fill in a rainy day get a paper recycling kit and get the kids to rip up old used paper to make recycled paper, it can be great fun.

Sea turtles play key roles in two ecosystem types that are critical to them as well as to humans—oceans and beaches/dunes. In the oceans, for example, sea turtles, especially green sea turtles, are one of very few creatures (manatees are another) that eat the sea grass that grows on the sea floor. Sea grass must be kept short to remain healthy, and beds of healthy sea grass are essential breeding and development areas for many species of fish and other marine life. A decline or loss of sea grass beds would damage these populations, triggering a chain reaction and negatively impacting marine and human life.

Beaches and dunes form a fragile ecosystem that depends on vegetation to protect against erosion. Eggs, hatched or unhatched, and hatchlings that fail to make it into the ocean are nutrient sources for dune vegetation[citation needed]. Every year, sea turtles lay countless eggs on beaches. Along one twenty-mile (32 km) stretch of beach in Florida alone, for example, more than 150,000 pounds of eggs are laid each year.

SEA TURTLE 1

The Chelonioidea has a world-wide distribution; sea turtles can be found in all oceans except for the polar regions. Some species travel between oceans.

Respiration

Sea turtles are almost always submerged in water, and, therefore, have developed an anaerobic system of respiration. Although all sea turtles breathe air, under dire circumstances they may divert to anaerobic respiration for long periods of time. When surfacing to breathe, a sea turtle can quickly refill its lungs with a single explosive exhalation and rapid inhalation. Their large lungs have adapted to permit rapid exchange of oxygen and to avoid trapping gases during deep dives. However, sea turtles must emerge while breeding, given the extra level of activity.

Life history

It takes decades for sea turtles to reach sexual maturity. After mating at sea, adult female sea turtles return to land to nest at night. In the extreme case, females return to the beach where they hatched. This can take place every two to four years in maturity. They make from one to eight nests per season..

The hatchling's gender depends on the sand temperature. Lighter sands maintain higher temperatures, which decreases incubation time and results in more female hatchlings.

Incubation takes about two months. The eggs in one nest hatch together over a very short period of time. When ready, hatchlings tear their shells apart with their snout and dig through the sand. Again, this usually takes place at night, when predators such as seagulls cannot fly. Once they reach the surface, they instinctively head towards the sea.

Salt gland

Sea turtles possess a salt excretory gland at the corner of the eye, in the nostrils, or in the tongue, depending on the species; chelonian salt glands are found in the corner of the eyes in leatherback sea turtles. Due to the iso-osmotic makeup of jellyfish and the other gelatinous prey upon which sea turtles subsist, sea turtle diets are high in salt.

MALDIVES: RHINOMURAENA QUAESITA

Rhinomuraena quaesita. It´s one of the smallest and most beautiful morays in the Maldives.
The ribbon eel is an elegant creature with a long, thin body and high dorsal fins. The ribbon eel can easily be recognised by its expanded anterior nostrils. Juveniles and sub-adults are jet black with a yellow dorsal fin, while females are yellow with a black anal fin with white margins on the fins. The adult males are blue with a yellow dorsal fin.

The ribbon eel grows to an overall length of approximately 100 cm (36 in), and has a life span of up to twenty years. The ribbon eel is the only moray eel that is not gonochoristic.

BehaviorLike many eels, the ribbon eel is sometimes thought to be angry or aggressive, because its mouth is often open, appearing ready to strike. In reality, the eel is simply breathing.

In the wild, the ribbon eel buries itself in sand or hides in rocks or reefs, dashing out to feed on shrimp and fish.

Maldives waters are home to wide variety of ecosystems, but it is most noted for their variety of colorful coral reefs, home to 300 species of fish. Seven species have been described as new to science, several more await description. Over 400 have been identified and catalogued and many are now held in the reference collection, including 5 species of turtles, 51 species of echinoderms, 5 species of sea grasses and 285 species of alga & sponges, crustaceans, and tunicates. These coral reefs are home to a variety of marine ecosystems that vary from planktonic organisms to sharks, crustaceans and sponges. Sponges have gained a special interest as five species have already being identified as having anti-tumor and anti-cancer properties In 1998, warming due to El Nino phenomenon killed 2/3 of the Maldives coral reefs due to bleaching. Coral reef bleaching is a “term suggested in place of "coral bleaching" because this condition is seldom limited to corals and most affected photo symbiotic hosts reside on coral reefs”. Bleaching is the loss of photo symbiotic microorganisms (dinoflagellates, red and green algae, or cyanobacteria), or the pigments of these photosymbionts, or some of both, from tissues of host cnidarians, sponges, molluscs or other photosymbiotic host animals. The name comes from the whitening of many hosts which possess few pigments of their own.
Due to the bleaching that occurred in 1998 from the El-Nino effect, much of the coral life was reduced. The marine water had been raised as much as 5 degrees, but several scientists came together to create electrified cones. Each cone was placed anywhere from 20–60 feet below the water. The electrified cone create an attraction for the larva to attach itself. In 2004 scientists witnessed corals regenerating. Corals began to eject pink-orange eggs and sperm. The growth of these corals are surprisingly five times faster than ordinary corals. One of the scientists named Azeez Hakim witnessed this extraordinary event. “Before 1998, we never thought that this reef would die. We had always taken for granted that these animals would be there, that this reef would be there forever. El Nino gave us a wake-up call that these things are not going to be there forever.” Hakim said. This is great news because without their recovery it would be difficult to maintain the balance of the environment. “They help by removing and recycling the carbon-dioxide which in excess amounts can lead to global warming. Not only this, they also act as a natural barrier against the tropical storms, floods and tsunamis. Seaweeds grow on the skeletons of dead coral”. Maldives are formed by a number of natural atolls plus atolls in the form of a few islands and isolated reefs today which form a pattern stretching from 7 degrees 10' North to 0 degrees 45' South.

The Maldives is a long and narrow country formed by 26 natural atolls. Some atolls are in the form of a number of islands by time and in the form of isolated reefs, which could be classified as smaller atoll formations. All land above the surface in the Maldives is of coralline origin. The atolls of the Maldives form a quite regular chain and, especially in the northern and central atolls, an arrayed structure is apparent. There are broad and deep channels in between some atolls.

Owing to the many beautiful diving grounds of the numerous atolls of the Maldives, this country has been marketed as a prime destination for scuba divers worldwide. Hence, during the last couple of decades many guides and maps of the best diving spots have been published and some of them are very accurate and give a wide array of useful hints.

THE MALDIVES

THE MALDIVES

The Maldives consists of approximately 1,190 coral islands grouped in a double chain of 26 atolls. The atolls are composed of live coral reefs and sand bars, situated atop a submarine ridge 960 kilometres long that rises abruptly from the depths of the Indian Ocean and runs from north to south.

The Maldives is the lowest country in the world, with a maximum natural ground level of only 2.3 metres with the average being only 1.5 metres above sea level, although in areas where construction exists, this has been increased to several metres. More than 80 per cent of the country's land, composed of coral islands scattered over an area about 850 km across the equator, is less than one metre above sea level

The reef is composed of coral debris and living coral. This acts as a natural barrier against the sea, forming lagoons. The barrier reefs of the islands protect them from the storms and high waves of the Indian Ocean

A layer of humus 15 centimetres thick forms the top layer of soil on the islands. Below the humus layer are 60 centimetres of sandstone, followed by sand and then fresh water. In the interior of the island, more vegetation such as mangrove and banyan grow. Coconut palms, the national tree, are able to grow almost everywhere on the islands and are integral to the lifestyle of the population

The limited vegetation and land wildlife is supplemented by the abundance of marine life. The waters around the Maldives are abundant in rare species of biological and commercial value, with tuna fisheries being traditionally one of the main commercial resources of the country. The Maldives have an amazing diversity of sea life, with corals and over 2,000 species of fish, ranging from reef fish to reef sharks, moray eels, and a wide variety of rays: Manta rays; Stingray; and Eagle ray. The Maldivian waters are also home for the whale shark

Climate

The Indian Ocean has a great effect on the climate of the country by acting as a heat buffer, absorbing, storing, and slowly releasing the tropical heat. The temperature of Maldives ranges between 24 °C and 33 °C throughout the year. Two seasons dominate Maldives' weather: the dry season associated with the winter northeastern monsoon and the rainy season, from the end of April to the end of October, which brings strong winds and storms. The shift from the moist southwest monsoon to the dry northeast monsoon occurs during October and November

Environmental Issues

Over the last century, sea levels have risen about 20 centimetres further rises of the ocean could threaten the existence of Maldives, being the lowest country in the world, with a maximum natural ground level of only 2.3 metres, with the average being only 1.5 metres above sea .In November 2008, President Mohamed Nasheed announced plans to look into purchasing new land in India, Sri Lanka, and Australia because of his concerns about global warming and the possibility of much of the islands being inundated with water from rising sea levels. The purchase of land will be made from a fund generated by tourism. The President has explained his intentions:

"We do not want to leave the Maldives, but we also do not want to be climate refugees living in tents for decades".A tsunami in the Indian Ocean caused by the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake caused serious damage to the socioeconomic infrastructure, which left many people homeless, and irreversible damage to the environment. After the disaster, cartographers are planning to redraw the maps of the islands due to alterations caused by the tsunami

On 22 April 2008, then Maldives President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom pleaded for a cut in global greenhouse gas emissions, warning that rising sea levels could submerge the island nation of Maldives.

CO: a listening , very tough ,I must admit. Don´t worry , it´s been only a go.
Phonetics: regular past tenses . Example and practice.
Homework: study the grammar and vocabulary of Unit 2 for the exam next Wednesday and we´ll carry on with the speeches because very few students came on Monday.

Christmas Apple Pie

Serve with vanilla ice cream and hard sauce

Ingredients:
a. Graham cracker crust (you can make your own or use a pre-made one)
1 large egg white (slightly beaten)

b. 5 Cups fresh peeled apples
1/2 cup powdered sugar
1/4 cup brown sugar
3 Tablespoons whole wheat flour
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon (we generally add a bit more)

c. 3/4 cups whole wheat flour
1/4 cup powdered sugar
1/4 cup brown sugar
1 stick melted butter (a bit over 1/3 cup)

Directions:

1. Brush egg white on crust, bake until light brown -- about 6 minutes (if store bought)
2. Combine b mix well, spoon into crust
3. Mix c put on as the top of the pie in thin sheets
4. Bake at 375 farenheit for about 50 minutes
5. Cool for about 4 hours.

Christmas in Great Britain

In Great Britain the hustle and bustle of the season begins well before Christmas and there is barely anytime for a break until the Twelfth night. There is preparation going on of foods, the sending of Christmas cards, the decorating of houses and churches, and the readying of gifts keep everyone busy even the youngest family members.

On Christmas Eve youngsters hang up their stockings on the ends of the beds or by the chimney so that when Father Christmas comes he can leave them something.

On Christmas morning the family traditionally opens their presents and prepares for a big feast which typically is served just after midday. The table gleams with the best china and glassware, and at every place on the table there is a cracker. The meal begins with a toast, followed by the popping of the crackers. After the meal they sit down in front of the Television for the traditional Christmas speech of the British Monarch.

In the afternoon they exchange visits with neighbors other family members.

Some churches in Great Britain have a Christingle service on the fourth Sunday of Advent. This is a carol service of Scandinavian origin at which every child received an orange and candle wrapped in a red ribbon. The candle represents Jesus and the ribbon stands for the blood of Christ and the love of God embracing the world.

In Britain, children write their letters to Father Christmas and then throw them into the fireplace so they will float up the chimney and fly to the North Pole. If the lists catch fire first, they have to rewrite them.

At Christmas dinner, a plum pudding is served with little treasures hidden inside that bring their finders good luck. Britain was the first country to hang up mistletoe.

TURRON Traditional Christmas meal in Spain.

450g blanched toasted almonds
225g granulated sugar
125ml clear honey
1 packet marzipan

1. Combine almonds, sugar and honey in large saucepan.
2. Set pan over very low heat.
3. Cook until sugar dissolves and bring to boil.
4. Cook three minutes, stirring constantly.
5. Remove from heat and stir in marzipan.
6. Beat thoroughly till smooth.
7. Spoon into well-greased pan 15cm by 23cm.
8. Mark into 4cm squares.

To my disappointment very few students has the speech ready . I repeat, this is one of the most common topics that can come out in Certificación, so if you don´t work with the ideas and their way of expressing them, you´ll certainly be in trouble.

Robin Hood

The story of Robin Hood is so well known that it scarcely needs to be reviewed, but don't worry, I'll do it anyway. The "facts ", at least one romantic version of them, are these. In the time of Richard the Lionheart a minor noble of Nottinghamshire, one Robin of Loxley, was outlawed for poaching deer. Now at that time the deer in a a royal forest belonged to the king, and killing one of the king's deer was therefore treason, and punishable by death.

So Robin took to the greenwood of Sherwood Forest, making a living by stealing from rich travellers and distributing the loot among the poor of the area. In the process he gained a band of followers and a spouse, Maid Marian. Despite the best efforts of the evil Sherrif of Nottingham he avoided capture until the return of King Richard from the Crusades brought about a full pardon and the restoration of Robin's lands. In other versions he dies at the hands of a kinswoman, the abbess of Kirklees Priory. That, in a very small nutshell, is the legend, but is there truth behind it?

Well, possibly. Someone, or maybe several someones, named Robin Hood existed at different times. Court records of the York Assizes refer to a "Robert Hod", who was a fugitive in 1226. In the following year the assizes referred to the same man as "Robinhud". By 1300 at least 8 people were called Robinhood, and at least 5 of those were fugitives from the law. In 1266 the Sherrif of Nottingham, William de Grey, was in active conflict with outlaws in Sherwood Forest. It seems most likely that a number of different outlaws built upon the reputation of a fugitive in the forest, and over time, the legend grew.

One thing to note about the early legends is that Robin Hood was not an aristocrat, as he was later portrayed, but a simple yeoman driven to a life of crime by the harsh rule of the law of the rich. As such, it is easy to see how his story soon became a favourite folk tale among the poor.

There is, in the grounds of Kirklees Priory, a old grave stone, marking the final resting place of one "Robard Hude". Proof that part of the tale may be true? It would be nice to think so.

Homework: The second set of exercises I gave you about conditional tenses. I´m very sorry if I also said the chapters in your grammars. That´s an awful lot of work to do and I can´t have been thinking properly if I told you to do so many exercises. Sorry again.
Grammar: I wish , conditional 3 and other words than if. We dealt with these chapters by means of giving example to illustrate the grammar point.
EO: What would you do if...people became green after telling a lie? and some other funny examples to make you speak in english for a while, we also worked on the third conditional.
CO: St.B.p.23. A song. "It´s my party" with the script to fill in and the audio. The rhythm is of the 60s of the last century, a very long time ago.
EO. St.b.p.23 "Public or private medicine?" I know many of you don´t have a clear idea of the topic, however you must make a serious effort to have an opinion about it because this is one of the many topic you may come across in Certificación.
Homework: Grammar, chapters 38,39,30,114,114 ,all of them are about conditionals and words used instead of if. And secondly a speaking activity: "Public or private medicine?". Remember that you must have an opinion about the topic. in case inspiration doesn´t come, browse the web.

EE: Write statements like: I drive a BMW, I don´t smoke.

Homework: workbook, p, 11,12. Study the new vocabulary ,which is a lot and write a paragraph using connectors. eg. I get up at seven and then I have a shower, after that I have coffee for breakfast. I go to work.....

Grammar: We carried on with conditionals a lot more in detail with examples ,explanations and more exercises. Conditionals 2,3 ,zero and other words such as when, provided, suppose....

EO: St.B. Student A on page 114 and student B on page 119. Each reads each parts and retell their partner. About hypochondriacs.
CE: St.B.p. 22,23. colds. Read and find the right title for each paragraph. Pronunciation was checked.
CO:St.B.p. 23. About alternative medicine. Four people giving their opinion about altenative medicine. Note down whether they agree or disagree and back up their ideas. A fourth listening with the script at sight so that it became a reading and listening exercise.
EO: Describing photographs. I gave a very useful handout with the correct order and expressions to use to describe a photo properly.
Homework: A second set of exercises on conditional . As it has the answers you can check them and in class ask me what you still haven´t understood.

Vocabulary: review of unit 1. I´ve realised you have to study more, a lot more the vocabulary and other items. Coming to class isn´t enough and inspiration in an exam doesn´t come spontaneously but having studied a lot before.
EE: I gave you a set of activities as a guide to write letters: formal and informal, all aimed at Certificación . Here you have the guided writing for certificacion guide (thes activities come form "Successful Writing Intermediate") and rules for writing formal letters. We did several activities and stopped at the end of letters applying for jobs.
Homework: a composition for Wednesday , 17 of November and ,of course, study a lot for the exam next Monday.
